In Minnesota, Mg deficiency has only been observed on very acid soils. Magnesium content in most agricultural soils lies between 0.05 for sandy soils and 0.5% for clay soils. For healthy adults, a normal blood plasma range is between 1.7 and 2.3 mg/dL. If fertilisers high in other are being used these should also be substituted for fertilisers low in cations. Sometimes, grass tetany, a livestock disorder caused by low levels of Mg in the diet, is reported where high rates of potash have been applied to grass pastures. Since Mg is a mobile element in the plant, the concentration of Mg usually decreases from the top to the bottom of the plant. Magnesium toxicity is rare. The optimum magnesium index for most soils is 2, however some soil types are naturally high in magnesium. As fertilizer recommendations are developed, emphasis should be placed on providing adequate amounts of magnesium in soils rather than the maintenance of a certain ratio of one nutrient to another.
